Ferris Bueller's Day Off Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Shredded

Cameron is in bed when Ferris calls his best friend. We see bottles of medicine and used kleenexes all over his dresser, which are symbols of the fact that while Ferris has just taken a day off Cameron is actually sick.

Red Phone

Ferris has a red phone in his room which he calls Cameron on, and he gets a call from his Dad on. The color of the phone is a symbol of Ferris' ability to burn up Cameron with his words to such a degree that he convince his best friend to come see him even when he's sick.

Trying to Kill Us

Jeanie is driving her Mom when Ferris runs in front of the car. She is the only one who sees him and she begins to speed in order to beat Ferris home and prove that he isn't sick to her parents. Her driving like a maniac to get home is a symbol for how much she disdains her brother getting away with his schemes.

Wallet

Jeanie shows Rooney his wallet which she found on the kitchen floor of her family's home. The wallet being found is a symbol that Rooney can't do anything to Bueller because Jeanie will ensure she tells everyone that Rooney broke into their home. And rather than sully his reputation Rooney backs off.

A Stand

Cameron tells Jeanie and Sloane that he is going to take a stand against his Dad. He begins to smash his father's Ferrari by kicking it. The Ferrari is a symbol of how much Cameron is left out by his Dad who chooses the material things in life over him.
