Exiles: A Novel Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Pram

A pram is a universal symbol of childhood. It makes it easy to carry a baby and move her around before she can move on her own. Zoe is found in her comfortable pram after her mother's disappearance. Harper explains, "She would have been warm enough deep inside her bassinet stroller." The pram is comfortable and warm due to the wraps and blankets in it. Consequently, she is immersed in her world and unaware of her mother's disappearance.

Questions

Kim's puzzling disappearance leaves her loved ones, and the community at large with numerous answered questions. Harper writes, "Those who knew and loved the family were left with their questions?" Nobody can answer the questions because of the lack of evidence of what contributed to Kim's disappearance. Unraveling the mystery is the key conflict that can only be resolved through real answers.

“Food and Wine”

Kim’s disappearance transpires in the backdrop of the “Marralee valley Annual Food and Wine Festival." The festival depicts the community as fun-loving and tight-knit. Such festivals are expected to bring joy to the participants. The memories after the festival are those of food, wine, and laughter. Kim's disappearance dents the pleasure of enjoying delicious food and sweet-tasting wine.
