Exiles: A Novel Summary

Exiles: A Novel Summary

Aaron Falk is a federal investigator for the government of Australia. One day, he is invited by a friend to attend his friend’s baby’s christening in a small town in Southern Australia’s wine country. Falk goes to his friend’s baby’s christening because he thinks the weekend will be relaxing. However, Falk seemingly constantly has a sense of mystery that follows him everywhere he goes.

After Falk arrives in the small town, he discovers that his friend’s baby’s christening coincides with the one-year anniversary of the sudden disappearance of a woman named Kim Gillespie. On a busy night during a local festival in the town, Kim left her sleeping baby in a stroller and vanished into the crowd of the festival. Despite a year-long search effort and help from people from across Australia, there has been no trace of her. However, when Kim's elder daughter asks the public for information which could help authorities find her mother, Falk and his old friend Raco find feel compelled to take the case on.

As Falk immerses himself the community and the nature in which it sits, Kim’s friends and family welcome them into their group, hoping that he can find. However, the group is potentially not as united as they appear to be. Secrets and long-buried truths begin to surface amongst the group as Falk digs deeper into Kim’s disappearance, which upsets those all across the town. With each revelation that Falk uncovers, he finds himself more entangled in the case and less likely to leave without answers. And with each revelation, Falk pushes further.

Amidst the chaos, Falk finds himself attracted to a woman in Kim's circle, which complicates his already complex investigation. As he tries to unravel the mystery surrounding Kim's disappearance, he also learns more about his friends and those who he had previously trusted. His friend, as it turns out, had something to do with Gillespie’s disappearance. And Kim, he later finds out, is dead, leaving her children motherless.
