How is Penelope presented in the novel?
Penelope is presented as a strong, brave, and independent character, who copes well considering the things she must endure. She is a wife and mother, but also is shown to have independence from this, and is generally presented as strong-willed. Indeed, in one passage, Circe comments on Penelope's lack of fragility:
"Her eyes held mine, gray and steady. It is a common saying that women are delicate creatures, flowers, eggs, anything that may be crushed in a moment's carelessness. If I had ever believed it, I no longer did."
