Father Carmen Amador is forced to perform the autopsy due to Dr. Dionisio Iguaran being out of town. The body comes back looking like Santiago has been "killed all over again." The priest's report notes seven fatal stab wounds as well as the fact that Santiago's liver revealed a poorly cured case of hepatitis, indicating he probably didn't have many more years left anyway.
The narrator seeks solace in his lover, Maria. She too is in mourning. The two try to have intercourse but she stops, stating "I can't, you smell of him." Everything that day smells of Santiago. The Vicario twins can't rid themselves of his scent. They both develop...
