Irony of Catholicism
Paul had always been told that he would be protected and looked after by the church. However, when Paul needed their help in supporting his family, he was turned away. As such, this text explores the ironic nature of some religious organizations.
The Great Depression
In a tragically ironic occurrence, Paul and his family are hit by the Great Depression just as they are really struggling to make ends meet. This event was the last thing they needed or expected.
Geremio's house
Before his death, Geremio had just bought a house. This was a signal to him that he had progressed along the path to achieving his dream. Ironically, Geremio is killed shortly after this.
Good Friday
Paul's family are devout Catholics, so Good Friday (a day commemorating Jesus' crucifixion) is an important day for them. Ironically, this is the day Geremio is killed.
Asking for help
On his death bed, Geremio asks Jesus to save him. Ironically, Geremio is not saved but is instead covered with concrete and killed.
