What is the role of capitalism in this book?
As well as exploring the nature of Catholicism, this book also explores the nature of capitalism. Throughout the book, we see that Paul and his family are not supported by either system and essentially fall through the cracks. They are left to fend for themselves, even after the sole provider of the family is killed in an accident. This leads Paul to question his faith and eventually leave Catholicism. He doesn't question capitalism as much, and instead sees it as a better option for helping his family.
