Paul
Paul is the primary protagonist and representation of the author’s life in the book. He is the eldest son of the Italian couple Geremio and Annunziata. At the age of twelve, Paul experiences the death of his father. Paul drops out of school and looks for a job to support his family. As the book progresses, Paul and his family go from one struggle to another. The hardship steers him to the church where instead of getting help, Paul becomes disillusioned with his faith. He questions God’s ultimate plans for him and his family.
Geremio
Geremio and his wife moved to America in search of a better life for their family. However, the reality of the American dream turned out to be heartache and disappointment. Geremio works as a foreman on a construction site in New York. He detests his job and wishes he could improve his family’s fortune. Geremio dies after part of the construction collapses and concrete pours over him.
Annunziata
Annunziata is Geremio’s wife and Paul’s mother. After her husband dies, Annunziata has a hard time providing for her eight children. She feels like a failure after her eldest son drops out to help provide for his siblings. However, Annunziata remains true to her religious faith and ethnic roots.
Father John
Paul seeks father John’s help after his father’s death. The father is empathetic but offers no substantial help. Paul loses faith in God and the Catholic Church.
