Christ in Concrete by Pietro di Donato is based on a true story. Di Donato’s father died on a construction site on Good Friday. The death inspired Di Donato to write a book about the struggles experienced by bricklayers, particularly Italian immigrants. Di Donato also became a bricklayer himself at a tender age before advancing to become a writer. In this narrative, he speaks out about Paul, a construction worker whose misfortunes prompt him to start doubting his Christian faith. Italian immigrants’ religious beliefs fail to offer any meaningful improvement in their lives. The story was first published as a short story in Esquire Magazine.
The main character in the book is Paul. Paul’s father is Geremio and Annunziata is his mother. Geremio is a Catholic firm believer. However, he does everything possible to provide for his family. Although Geremio works hard, he is demoralized by low pay, excess labor, and unfavorable working conditions. One day on Good Friday, Geremio is crushed to death by a concrete, thus, the title of the book. After Geremio’s death, Paul assumes his position and becomes a construction worker. However, due to his age, the company pays him peanuts.
Generally, the story revolves around the thoughts and struggles of Italian-American construction workers. Most of these immigrants came to the USA to escape poverty in Italy. As well, they were looking for opportunities in America. However, they were met with challenges that shook off their strong Catholic faith. Di Donato seems to be highlighting the challenges and poor living conditions of Italian Americans during the 20th century.
