A teenager’s nightmares
Like any other teenager, Finn had a lot of insecurities and they tormented him in his dreams. They used to be “filled with physical stuff” such as “getting naked with this girl or that one”, “psychos with hatchets and roller skates”, “showing up in a class wearing nothing but a snorkel and a single plaid sock”, “flying so high that not even the clouds could keep up”. This imagery shows how ridiculous teenagers’ fears could be and emphasizes the point that no matter how strange Finn is – according to the people of Bone Gap – he has the same fears as other teenagers do.
The popular one
If Finn was considered to be strange one, Sean was the popular one, for “everybody loved Sean.” When someone needed help, “Sean was the guy who showed up, sirens blaring, arms pumping, black bag swinging in his big capable hands, sharp eyes taking it all in”. Sean didn’t ask a lot of questions and “never wrong ones”, so people were comfortable with him. There was one more reason for the people of Bon Gap to love Sean. Sean “loved Roza” and the people of Bone Gap loved her. This imagery portrays a guy, who is loved by everyone and creates evoke positive emotions, for it is impossible to dislike Sean.
The local eccentric
Charlie Valentine was a local eccentric. The people of Bone Gap liked him anyway, for in spite of the fact that he was slightly mad, he was absolutely harmless. He “had long gray hair” and “a long gray beard”. It was possible to say that “he looked like the wizard from the Lord of the Rings, except for T-shirt that said born to be wild”. Not to mention that he was always in a hurry, for he was “on his way to date”. However, no one had ever seen a woman he dated. This imagery evokes only positive emotions, for every person, who has ever lived in a little town or village, knows someone like Charlie Valentine, a harmless, but eccentric person, who amuses the whole community with unbelievable tales.
