Child Trafficking
At the center of this book is the heart-breaking theme of children being trafficked for profit. Judy and May had a family before they were torn apart, separated and sold to wealthy couples who were desperate for a child. Georgia Tann was responsible for the very real trafficking ring through the adoption agency, the Tennessee Children’s Home Society, which is featured heavily in this book.
Fate
Having spent the majority of their years apart, it was almost impossible for May and Judy to have any connection as grown adults and be reunited to uncover the truth. And yet, this is exactly what happens when Avery uncovers the deep secrets residing in her family tree. The fact that May recognizes Avery’s face despite never having met her before suggests that fate can bring people together through the most unexpected of means.
Scandal
Senator Wells Stafford is desperate to for the family to be re-elected and needs the aid of Avery to help head his campaign. Yet, when the secrets of the illegal adoption ring come out, it threatens her future position as Senator. Having been desperate for a child, the Stafford family had adopted Judy, not realizing that she was a trafficked child.
