The story begins in 1939, where a young woman, Christine, has given birth to a stillborn child. The doctor advises her of an adoption agency in Memphis.
The scene flicks to the present day where Avery, daughter of Senator Wells Stafford, is preparing to take her father’s position in congress due to his longstanding battle with cancer. At one of their political events at a nursing home, Avery is confronted by an elderly woman, May Crandall, who calls her by the name "Fern".
Later, Avery gets a phone call from the nursing home who reveal that May took Avery’s bracelet when she met her and they have it. when Very meets May in the nursing home, she sees a photograph of a woman that resembles her grandmother Judy Stafford, whom May refers to as “Queenie”.
Confused as to how the two know each other, Avery investigates into Judy’s belongings and finds a phone number to someone called Trent turner. he is shifty and refuses to give her a stack of papers that belonged to Judy. However, Avery finds some papers linked to the Tennessee Children’s Home Society (TCHS). She learns of the corrupt adoption agency which kidnapped poor children from their families. Avery learns that Judy was actually kidnapped and sold to Christine’s family to replace their stillborn child. The scene flashes back to Judy’s kidnap and enslavement to the adoption agency.
Avery then learns that May and Judy were actually twin sisters who had been sold to different families by the agency. She reunites the two sisters and forms a romantic relationship with Trent.
