Before We Were Yours Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Inhumanity

Inhumanity is symbolized by the love of money and the illegal trade of innocent children. The story narrates the illegal adoption of children stolen and sold to other families. The Memphis Adoption Organization symbolizes inhumanity because the center purports that it is taking children's interest at heart, but the reality is the complete opposite. The organization's interest is to make profits from stealing and selling children to different families.

Avery as a symbol of hope

After Avery becomes Senator, she visits one of the children's homes and develops an interest in investigating the illegal adoption of children in the Memphis Adoption Organization. Avery is determined to uncover all the evils of the agency, and she last discovers that Judy and May are twin sisters who were stolen and sold to different families when they were children. Consequently, Avery symbolizes the hope of reuniting families illegally separated in the past by the adoption agency.

Brotherhood

Brotherhood is symbolized by Rill, who is determined to do everything to protect his sisters and brothers. Rill discovers that they were kidnapped, and the adoption agency is after generating money from the illegal sale of children. Besides the illegal trade of children, the agency mistreats and enslaves innocent children stolen from their legitimate families.
