Italian Heritage
Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it.
It is no secret that northern New Jersey is home to one of the most vibrant Italian-American communities in the country. Although The Sopranos might have taken their portrayal of us a bit too far, it is definitely true that our culture is defined by tightly knit families with rich histories. My upbringing was no different, with every holiday and gathering dominated by recollections of villages a world away such as Montefalcione and Massa Lubrense. Year after year, I listened to these stories trying to imagine these places and my connection to them.
When I finally had the opportunity to visit Italy, I was overcome with anticipation, emotion, and excitement. Within moments of entering the comuni of my ancestors, I began to feel as if I had already been there; the stories I grew up with came to life. It was surreal to see my last name everywhere - jewelry stores, cafes, memorials, and even buses! Although a language barrier stood as a challenge between me and my family, it did not stop us from appreciating our time together.
Reflecting on the experience, I recognized the importance in maintaining the cultural and familial ties between our two communities. I take pride in cooking Italian food, learning our shared history, and...
