About six years ago, my mom decided to go back to school to pursue a degree in nursing. Every day when I would return home from school, I would be welcomed by the sight of her sprawled out on the couch surrounded by a mountain of textbooks and papers. I would typically greet her and then go on with my day without giving a second thought to what she was learning until one afternoon when I decided to glance inside one of her books.

When I opened the pages, I was instantly greeted by hundreds of lessons and pictures discussing the structure and function of body parts that I didn’t even know existed. I was immediately hooked on the subject, and I began to wonder why I had never before considered how the human body worked. I had always taken for granted the fact that my heart could beat or that my lungs could breathe. But now, with every step I took, I began to wonder how I could accomplish such a feat so easily.

After that day, I knew that I had to learn more. I devoured any book that I could get my hands on, from anatomy to physiology to biology. And the more I learned, the more amazed I became.
