George is what we might call a "rebel without a cause." He is a little lost in his ways. As Mr. Emerson says, he is saddened by the fact that the things of the universe do not "fit."

Students might have a range of opinions of why Mr. Emerson enlists Lucy in particular. He does warn her not to fall in love with George, though perhaps this is reverse psychology. Maybe Mr. Emerson sees in Lucy someone who seems to have everything together, but who secretly is seeking another path.
