Preparing for Essay-Writing

Kind of Activity:

Individual Writing

Objective:

In this activity, students will create an argument and gather evidence to practice skills necessary for the final essay.

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.1

Structure:

Students should begin by choosing one of the following themes:

Faith, discrimination, religion, building, water, home

Students may also suggest a different theme to the instructor.

Part 1: Gathering Evidence

Students should spend the first ten minutes of this activity combing through the text for moments that relate to their theme. These may be flashbacks from Zeitoun or Kathy's lives or present-day events....
