No one asks about how he is nor if he has any loved ones waiting for him. They merely conduct their examinations on him and send him on his way. The experience is shown as being very lonely and depressing.

    Norval stands for being more than an adopted pet. Norval is a representation of a friendships between the old man and his pet. The old man is not shown to have any friends or family waiting for him when he leaves the room, but the fish takes the place of them as it is always waiting for him.

    The main message being conveyed is through the life experience of the old man. The old man reflects the temporary nature of life and how fragile it truly is.
