About the Author

Emily Brontë was born in 1818 in Yorkshire, in northern England. She was the fifth of six children, five girls (Maria, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne) and one boy (Branwell). Her father, Patrick, was a curate, and when Emily was two, the family moved to a parsonage at Haworth, where they would live for all of Emily's life. Her mother died shortly thereafter, and her aunt Elizabeth Branwell, their mother's sister, came to help with the care of the children. Patrick struggled to support his family; the Brontës would continue to struggle for money throughout their lives.
