Women involvement in revolutionary changes

Traditionally, the role of women was known to be childbearing and taking care of the home. Other critical things were left for the men who were the dominant gender. Ironically, the women in Tzotzil Township participated in a rebellion which called for revolutionary changes. Consequently, women in this town are doing the unimaginable.

The satire of the drinking ritual

According to the local community, drinking alcohol is the perfect way of serving God and spreading unity among the community. Any individual who drinks alcohol, he is given the power to preach unity. The reader finds the entire of the drinking ritual ironic because the drinkers intentionally ignore the side effects of alcohol.

The irony of the cultural beliefs

The Zapatista men drink alcohol to unify the society. Ironically, the drinking habit is destroying the society rather than serving its sole purpose of serving God and bringing the people together. Instead, men are becoming useless economically, and they end up becoming burdens in the society.

The irony of Jazmin’s father

A father should be a person who loves, encourages and supports his family without any form of partiality. Ironically, Jazmin’s father depicts a completely opposite attributes. For instance, he physically tortures Jazmin and constantly reminds her that she is a failure. The father is doing the opposite of what is expected of him.

The irony of alcoholism

The age at which young boys start drinking in the Maya town is ironic. Boys start drinking at a young age than expected. However, the readers realize that the behavior of fathers forces children to start drinking alcohol at an early age because of frustrations.
