When leaving Kennedy Meadows, Cheryl says that alone has "always felt like an actual place for her". Then she says that being on the PCT has changed her conception of what it means to be alone. Is it still possible today to be alone in the way that Cheryl was? Why or why not?
It certainly is possible to be alone in the way that Cheryl was, albeit perhaps to a lesser extent. An interesting argument could be made that the internet has made silence and solitude less pervasive in our lives. The teacher should invite students to reflect on the ways in which they might actually be less alone than Cheryl was even if they also went hiking on the PCT. Would they have brought along...
