Frederick Douglass's speech "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" is perhaps most easily paired with his widely-read autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. Students who are familiar with the Narrative may also have read the memoir of the non-slave turned escaped slave Solomon Northup, 12 Years a Slave. Because of the time period in which Douglass's speech was given, the teacher might also find it useful to revisit Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin with students.
