Avis
This frustrated mother of a combat veteran leaves her husband for old, deep-seeded reasons. Her ethical compass is useful in helping notice Nate's odd behavior, the abusive nature of his marriage, and ultimately, the serious problem of having him as a police officer.
Jim
Avis's husband whom she reunites with to deal with the problem of their son, Nate, who seems to be beating his young wife.
Bashkim
The young Albanian son of refugees, Bashkim is raised in Las Vegas where his parents run an ice cream truck business. He loves his school and his family, and he's a good kid, but life is not easy for him.
Arjeta
Bashkim's mother and loving care-giver. She is often beaten in front of her son, and ultimately dies in a tragic accident when Nate thinks she is holding a weapon, and he kills her.
Sardik
Bashkim's violent father, made violent against his wife by the constant paranoia and PTSD that constantly keeps him in a fight-or-flight mode. He doesn't handle situations well.
Roberta
A social worker with lots of experience who provides commentary on the real status of Las Vegas. She takes Bashkim's case when Nate murders Bashkim's mother.
Luis
A military veteran who served in Afghanistan and was overwhelmed by the grief of the violent death of his friend, until the depression and PTSD cause him to shoot himself in the head. He survives and makes amends with his pen pal, Bashkim.
Dr. Ghosh
Luis's therapist who provides him with a hopeful outlook on life and helps him reconnect with his pen pal who he sent a mean letter to during a suicidal episode.
Nate
Avis's son, a troubled man with abusive tendencies from his PTSD. After his tours in Iraq, he returns to Las Vegas and begins his career as a police officer.
