Consider the role of work in Act I. What are the characters' relationships to their jobs?

So far in Uncle Vanya, we've met a number of characters who work and live on the estate, including the titular Vanya and his niece Sonya. For them, the estate is more than a job - it's a home. We also meet Dr. Astrov, who is burnt out and haunted from years of witnessing death and suffering in his career as a doctor. Students should consider possible thematic connections between the different characters and their relationships to and feelings about their work. Encourage students to pay attention to how characters talk about labor as they proceed further into the text.
