Ulysses continues the story of Stephen Dedalus, which began in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, while simultaneously expanding on many of the themes Joyce brings up in the earlier novel. Ulysses also ties closely with Homer's Odyssey, with Joyce very pointedly creating a parallel between the two works from the title alone.
