Ubik Background

Ubik Background

Phillip K. Dick was one of the most prominent American science fiction authors. Ubik is a science fiction novel published in 1969 and is revered as one of the greatest of the author’s science fiction work.

It is set in a futuristic world in the year 1992 where people have evolved to having extraordinary psychic powers and also expanded their habitat outside the planet Earth. The term “Ubik” refers to a sort of substance present everywhere, and it is the only thing that can help resolve the issues the main character Joe faces.

The main theme presented in the novel is the connection between the technology and the tangible with the metaphysical or intangible. It could be seen as a metaphoric contemplation of God and religion. It could also be argued that the novel is existentialist in its exploration of humanity, meaning of life and death.
