Toronto, Mississippi is a thrilling tale of a young disabled girl named Jhana and her family. The play opens up with the unexpected arrival of King, Jhana’s absentee father. King abandoned his family years ago to follow his dreams of being an Elvis impersonator. He traveled through different states performing different songs by the renowned king of rock and roll. Now he hopes to reunite with his family especially his daughter Jhana.
Jhana lives with her mother Maddie and their boarder, Bill. After her husband left, Maddie buried herself in her work and taking care of Jhana. She spends hours teaching high school students and rarely spends time socializing. Bill is in love with Maddie but refuses to admit it. He fears Maddie has not moved on from her previous relationship. Nevertheless, Maddie and Bill take great care of Jhana. During summer break, Jhana works in a workshop for the disabled. She dreams of becoming a performing artist like her father.
King’s return disrupts the family structure Maddie has built for her daughter. After King abandoned his family, Maddie became overprotective of her daughter. Only trusted friends like Bill are allowed to have any relationship with Jhana. Despite her limitations and overprotective mother, Jhana constantly strives to achieve her goals and fulfill her passion for singing and performing. She is funny, passionate, and driven.
