Tom and Viv Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Tom and Viv Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Blood

We see blood on sheets that Viv desperately attempts to wash clean. The blood is a symbol of Viv's medical condition, and also of her secret that she did not disclose to Tom before they were married that there was anything wrong with her.

Knee-Deep

Tom leaves the honeymoon suite and walks straight into the sea, knee-deep with his pants and shoes still on. This is a symbol that though he may desire to turn back, he cannot now as he is too deep into it seeing that they are already married.

Dinner Roll

Viv is told to be quiet at the dinner table. She picks up a roll to eat from and continues to talk about war. The roll is a symbol of her picking away at her family with every bite she picks off.

Banker

Tom has taken a job as a banker, set-up by Viv's father. To Viv this is a symbol of him giving up on his dream of becoming a poet.

Bottom's Up

Tom guzzles one glass of wine after another while at a dinner party. The symbol is that he is suppressing the strain of his marriage upon his life with the wine.
