Tom says this to Mrs. Haigh-Wood asks how the sunlight was in their room. It is a way to conceal if they were making love or not, and a test by Viv's mother to see if Tom is discreet in his answer.
"Yes, I think you're going to make a wonderful member of the family."
Mr. and Mrs. Haigh-Wood are unsure of Tom when they meet him as he and their daughter have run off and eloped, and he is nearly penniless. Yet, they accept him into their family quite fluidly. One reason being that Mrs. Haigh-Wood appreciates his discretion, which she remarks about in this statement.
"Three out of four Junior Officers don't come back, Tom. Say cheerio to Viv for me."
Maurice has come to bid farewell to Tom and Viv, as he has been called upon to serve during the Great War. He is scared to go, and in a way he has come to say goodbye, potentially for good to both of them.
