Tom
Tom is one of the focal characters in the film. After completing his studies at Oxford, Tom decides to establish a new chapter of his life in England. He believes that living and working in the country will further his career as a poet and literary critic. In England, he meets Viv, a beautiful and spirited young lady who is ready to start a family. Tom and Viv get married. On their honeymoon, Tom instantly realizes Viv has been withholding significant information about her life.
Viv
Viv was quick to pressure Tom into marriage despite harboring secrets about her life. Viv suffers from hormonal imbalance, which at the time of their union had no cure. Viv suffered from severe menstruation which made it impossible to consummate their marriage. She, in addition, had frequent outbursts and was very impolite. Viv and Tom stayed married for fifteen years. Before her death, Tom agreed to send his wife to a mental hospital where she was institutionalized for nine years.
Maurice
Maurice is Viv’s brother. Before Viv and Tom got married, Maurice had conveyed his concerns about their union. At the time, Tom was drunk with desire hence paid no attention to Maurice’s distress. A week after the marriage, Tom realized that Maurice’s concerns were genuine.
Viv's Parents
A month after their wedding, Tom returned Viv to her parent's house. Viv’s father was furious, but her mother understood Tom’s predicament. Viv’s mother saw the love the young couple shared. She took Tom to the garden and reasoned with him. Tom took Viv back the same day.
