Today I Am Carey Summary

Today I Am Carey Summary

Today I Am Carey is a novel written by Martin Shoemaker, and is based on his successful short story, Today I Am Paul. This science fiction novel tells us the story of a droid called Carey and explores issues surrounding artificial intelligence and technology. At first, Carey cares for a lady called Mildred, who has Alzheimer's. She assists Mildred, helping her with daily tasks and chores. Carey shows some signs of sentience when she has a desire to help Mildred reclaim old memories.

After Mildred passes away, Carey is given to the Owens family, consisting of Paul Owens, Susan Owens, and their daughter Millie. Here, Carey gains sentience, and becomes a key part of the family, filling emotional and personal gaps for each member. Carey is particularly fond of Millie, and the two become best friends. In this novel, Carey experiences the full range of human emotions, celebrations and experiences, leading us to question what really makes someone human.
