Carey
Interestingly, the protagonist of this novel is not a human but is instead an android. Despite essentially being a robot, Carey is a complex, humorous and caring character, who seems to experience the world as humans do. Through this character, Shoemaker explores artificial intelligence and the issues that arise.
Mildred
An elderly lady with Alzheimer's who Carey is employed to care for. Carey is incredibly useful to Mildred, helping her with daily tasks, providing companionship, and comfort.
Paul Owens
Mildred's son, and the father of the Owens family. He works as a scientist and buys Carey after his mother passes away.
Susan Owens
Susan works as a teacher. She is Paul's wife and Millie's mother.
Millie Owens
The daughter of the Owens family, who is described as being "curious." She and Carey become best friends and grow up together.
