An older woman called Mildred has Alzheimer’s disease. As a result, she acquires an android, namely Carey, to help her in daily activities. The android is designed in a way to manage her condition when she forgets about her responsibilities. The android also acts as her family. Unfortunately, Mildred dies, and the android should be assigned another responsibility. The android’s new responsibility is to assist the Owens family. Carey is tasked with providing the service to Susan, Paul, and Millie. Millie befriends Carey because they grow up together.
The novel displays the life of Carey and Owens through the years. Carey provides service to Owens alongside exploring and studying the world. It improves with time. Carey learns that he has to make hard decisions to survive challenges. The android is intended to comfort sick people and sympathizes with them. The book shows how human beings have invented machines/robots to assist them in everything. Human beings are destined to age. However, robots don’t age but transform with time. Robots are designed to make things easier for humans.
