Titus Andronicus doesn't neatly fit into any category of Shakespeare play; happily, however, this creates a variety of opportunities for scaffolding.
Because it is based on Senecan tragedies, and especially upon Seneca's play Thyestes, the teacher may find it helpful to situate Titus Andronicus in this tradition of dramaturgy. Equally, as an early example of Shakespearean tragedy, the teacher can use students' knowledge of other, later tragedies to frame and advance discussion. Finally, as Titus Andronicus takes place in Ancient Rome, students may also find it helpful to compare it to the Bard's "Roman" and "history" plays.
