Female genital mutilation

Female genital mutilation (or FGM) is the practice involving the removal of parts of female genitalia. It is a criminal offense in many countries. Blessing encounters it in the novel.

Sunbird

A sunbird is a brightly colored bird native to parts of Africa and Middle Eastern countries.

Black gold

A term used to refer to crude oil. Crude is black in color but 'gold' because it is an expensive commodity.
