Blessing
Blessing is the main character and narrator of the story. She is a 12 year old girl who loved her life very much in Lagos until she found her parents break up because her father cheated on his mother. She is an innocent girl who found happiness in the simple things in the village. Blessing is a curious girl who asked too many questions, and always wanted to know the reason behind everything. She cared about her family, and she loved Ezikiel, her brother, very much. She chose not to learn at school and to be a birth attendant with her grandmother instead. Finally, she chose to stay with her grandparents instead of moving to London with her parents.
Ezikiel
Ezikiel is Blessing's 14-year-old brother. He is a very smart boy who loved education and always wanted to increase his knowledge. He aspired to be a doctor. Ezikiel and Blessing were best friends until they moved to the village, where Ezikiel became more focused on his studies and Blessing became more focused on birth attending. Unfortunately, Ezikiel's life dramatically changes when he fails his exams at school and he is advised to leave. He decides to stop learning and join the Sibeye boys. Ezikiel hates his stepfather, Dan, because he is white. So, he gathers his boys and they kidnap Dan. Next, Ezikiel tries to break the pipeline, but it causes an explosion that ends his life.
Alhaji
Alhaji is Blessing's grandfather who has a superior position among his village. He was a Muslim man who had a mosque, and he gathered people for prayer. Alhaji decided one day to marry another woman, because marrying more than one woman was normal in his village. Moreover, he had no sons, and he thought a new wife would bring him one. Alhaji was a strong man who was able to feed a huge family with small amount of money. He was responsible for Blessing's family, Youssef's family (their driver), and him and his wife.
Grandma
Grandma is a wise woman who Blessing got attached to and loved so much. She was a birth attendant and an amazing story teller. When Alhaji told her that he was going to marry another woman, she got very mad but eventually was able to cope with it and treat Celestine as her daughter and her friend. She taught Blessing many things and skills, including midwifery.
Timi
Timi is Blessing's mother, who was Christian and lived with her husband in Lagos. She was persistent with him despite beating her and drinking to the point of insanity, but when she found him on top of another woman, she couldn't bear it and eventually broke up with him. When they moved to the village, she found work at a bar to help fund her family. She got a friend, Dan, who later became her husband. Timi wasn't able to cope with the change of Lagos to a poor village. Unfortunately, Timi wasn't a very good mother, as she didn't care very much about the whereabouts of Ezikiel and Blessing, for Ezikiel joined the Sibeye boys and Blessing became a birth attendant without her noticing.
