This One Summer, the graphic novel written by Canadian author Mariko Tamaki, tells the story of the summer that two friends called Rose and Windy spent together in a small beach town called Awago. Rose, who is the narrator of the story, is dealing with turmoil at home because her parents fought constantly. Windy, who is Rose's friend (and whom Rose considers to be her little sister), is dealing with struggles of her own. But the two share one thing in common: their interest in boys. As the two navigate family issues, issues with disabilities, and their burgeoning interests in boys, they grow closer to each other and learn more about life.
Tamaki's novel, while well-reviewed and critically lauded (it won a Caldecott Medal in 2015), is also one of the most banned and "most challenged" books of 2016 and 2018 because of its mature themes and subject matter - including sexual content.
