The Young and the Damned Imagery

The Young and the Damned Imagery

Bullfighting

One of the opening scenes we see the boys pretending to be bulls and bullfighters. The camera becomes the cloth luring the bull in and then the point of view of the bull played by the boy. The imagery shows us that these are young boys playing a kids game of make believe, but the reality of bullfighting is death. Thus this foreshadows what is to come with Jaibo and Pedro.

Foundations

We see Jaibo, Pedro and another boy going after Don Carmelo as the shot fades into an abandoned building under construction. The imagery reveals that like the building, these boys have been abandoned in an incomplete state, and thus this is why they are the way they are.

Nightmare

We see Pedro's nightmare occur in slow motion. Even Pedro's body staying behind as he is awakened in a dream body. Julian is beneath the bed and then Jaibo takes the meat from Pedro's mother she gives to him for himself. The imagery shows that Pedro is suffering from the consequences of the actions of Jaibo, and that Jaibo is taking all of the nourishment and love from his life.

Final Shot

The final shot of the scene is Meche and her grandfather dumping Pedro's body into a pile of garbage. His body roles down as the camera pans away. The imagery of the pan relates to how, the grandfather and Meche are choosing to look away. The the death of a boy is not a reason to bring trouble from the police on them. It shows how the impoverished perpetrate more poverty upon themselves in a system that does not support them.
