The emerald pendant
The emerald pendant is a Mayfair family heirloom and is symbolic of the history of Mayfair witches. The pendant is engraved with the name Lasher, the demon that haunts the strongest witch in the family, and it falls into the possession of the strongest witch. The emerald pendant originates from the time of the witch Deborah and Petyr van Abel – the Talamasca member. Deborah saw the pendant on the market in Holland after Petyr rescued and brought her there and later persuaded her future husband to buy it for her. The pendant doesn’t seem to wield power on its own but is simply a symbol of Mayfair’s history.
The Mayfair House
The Mayfair House on First Street is a symbol in and of itself. Similar to the emerald pendant, the house holds the weight of Mayfair history. It is a place that shows the power the family possessed in the past, but it is also a place of great tragedy, where many powerful Mayfair witched met with their demise. In the present time, it is a place both Rowan and Michael feel attached to and begin planning their future.
Michael’s power
Michael’s power plays a spiritual role in the novel. After drowning and being rescued by Rowan, he remembers meeting spiritual entities on the other side, who gave him an important mission to accomplish. His power includes knowing the history of everything and everyone he touches, which is why he decides to wear gloves. Michael’s power and mission are a mystery in the novel, especially because he comes from New Orleans and from the street near the Mayfair house.
