The dark nature of the scene is implicit: "Waves boomed against the cliffs, clouds rolled like molten lead, and all those elements in between warped in the night as if part of the strange event that was occurring in the fortress."

The quiet nature of the dormitories

A simile is used in the direct comparison of the silence in the dormitories to the that of tombs in a cemetery. The creepy aspect of the situation in the dorms, and in particular the silence is implied: "For most of the day, the dormitories had been as quiet as tombs."

The glowing of the implants

The narrator uses a simile to introduce the imagery of the new implants glowing on their foreheads. The narrator directly compares the glowing of the implanted army to that of the moon. The writer notes: "The new implants glowed like moons on their foreheads. Their sheets covered them like shrouds." Notice the use of the simile in emphasizing how the sheets are covering the implanted army.

The appearance of the implanted army as it reboots

The narrator uses a simile to present and emphasize on the appearance of the implanted army as it reboots. The imagery of the army becomes more pronounced as the army whispers, writhes, frowns and tangles in its long white robes. This simile further adds to the imagery: "It whispered and writhed, frowned and tangled in its long white gowns and sheets until it looked like a shoal of fish trying to escape from a net."

The rising of the implanted army

The narrator compares the rising of the army to the rising of mist. This particular language use enhances the visualization of the event as the soldiers rise from the long lines of beds. Additionally, the horror of the nurses is emphasised using the word "as," where the horror that gripped the nurses is linked to the witness of rising corpses in a morgue: "But as the army began to rise like mist from those long lines of beds, the nurses were gripped by dark horror, as if they were witnessing a morgue of corpses."
