About the Author

Bertolt Brecht was born on February 10, 1898 in Augsburg, Germany to a middle-class family. His devout Catholic mother who would have a significant influence on his future writing, both in terms of imparting knowledge of the Bible and in presenting a certain style of female character often seen in Brechtian drama. Although Brecht studied medicine as a young man (in part to avoid serving as a soldier in World War I), he was drawn to theater and writing, and to Marxism and other leftist stances.
