The Swan Book Imagery

The White Swan

The white swan is introduced by Bella Donna in her storytelling. She states that when she was fleeing from the climate wars that ravaged her native country, she came across the white swan. It is the white swan that guided her to her refuge. The white swan is therefore a portrait of hope and faith in the book.

The Black Swan

Unlike the white swan, the black swan is portrayed as being a more desolate creature. It seems to attach itself to Oblivia as it resonates with her bleak life. As Oblivia is trapped, much like the black swan, it represents the idea of loss of hope.

The Swamps

The swamps are the place where all the refugees are kept, the Australian government ensures to keep them secluded from the rest of the population and they are treated inhumanely. Lack of food and other basic resources means that people are often left starving. Hence, the swamp is portrayed as a dystopia of sorts.
