Who is Bella Donna and what is her role in the book?
Bella Donna was once a privileged white woman who was forced out of her native country due to the climate wars. She travels the world seeking for refuge and this is where she finds Oblivia, living under an old tree, and takes her in and cares for her. She has an aptitude for her story telling and regales all the other refugees with her real life experiences.

What happens to Oblivia?
We are told at the beginning, that Oblivia is a young girl who has been gang raped, and the trauma left her mute. She is rescued and cared for by Bella Donna. However, she is later kidnapped by Finch and he keeps her locked up in her apartment without any companionship, save for the black swans that visit her in her confinement.

What is the purpose of the swans?
The white swan is a symbol of hope as it came to Bella Donna in her time of need as a refugee. The black swans are more attuned to Oblivia's upbringing, as she has witnessed many tragedies in her life and they seem to understand her pain.
