Oblivion ‘Oblivia’ Ethyl(ene)
Oblivia is the main protagonist of the story. She is an Aboriginal girl who is ‘lost’ and later found in an old eucalyptus tree by Bella Donna, having been in a deep sleep for a decade. She is a survivor of gang rape, which goes on to affect her mental state for the duration of her life.
Bella Donna
Bella Donna is a refugee from the Climate Wars, which devastated her native country. She is the one who discovers Oblivia and shelters her from the harsh realities of life. She is an apt storyteller and talks of how important it is for the Aboriginals to claim back their rightful land. She also tells tales of the beauty of the black swan, as a metaphor for the struggles and eventual success of Aboriginal’s.
Warren Finch
Finch is the first Aboriginal President of Australia and later becomes a husband to Oblivia after he kidnaps her. He is cruel and dominating and leaves Oblivia locked up in his apartment tower, only to show her off at functions as his trophy wife.
