The Summer Tree Quotes

Quotes

“There are kinds of action, for good or ill, that lie so far outside the boundaries of normal behavior that they force us, in acknowledging that they have occurred, to restructure our own understanding of reality. We have to make room for them.”

Narrator

The five university students are plunged into the world of magic that requires them to assume great responsibilities. Akin to other characters, Kim is reincarnated with a new role and has the obligation of undertaking magical duties in the tapestry. On their arrival in Fionavar, Ysanne the Seer identifies Kim as her replacement according to the vision she has had. She proceeds to awaken the clairvoyant powers in Kim in preparation for the succession. Moreover, she indicates the important magical objects that Kim will need in her new role. Consequently, Ysanne commits suicide to allow Kim to possess the deep knowledge and powers of a seer. The statement highlights the actions and sacrifices that had to be taken for Kim to take on her new role as the Seer of Brennin.

“We are the total of our longings”

Narrator

Each of the students is chosen for their personality, which makes them the perfect candidates for their roles in Fionavar. Though they share quite a few things in the human world, their personalities are emphasized in the tapestry. In the quote, Kevin as a lyric writer decides to be poetic and writes down the statement. It is somewhat of a foreshadowing of how they will adapt and progress upon learning of Fionavar. For instance, Kevin shows his devotion to the Prince while Kim demonstrates her commitment as a seer. Moreover, Paul displays his martyrdom by sacrificing himself for the greater cause. Thus, the Fionavar tapestry allows the characters to embrace their inner desires or face their demons.

“We salvage what we can, what truly matters to us, even at the gates of despair.”

Narrator

The story is about the shift from regular life into a world where there is a power struggle between good and dark forces. The human characters have to acclimate to their new surroundings and embrace the risk and threats of their missions. The high stakes in the battle of light versus evil prompt the students to make difficult decisions and sacrifices. In this case, Galadan has kidnapped Jennifer and proceeds to take her to Rakoth Maugrim after he breaks loose. The trajectory of her life takes a sudden turn since she has to endure the abuse and mistreatment of the Unraveller. As such, she epitomizes the despair that the main characters will suffer without giving up as they participate in the war.
