The Sorrows of Satan Summary

The Sorrows of Satan Summary

The Sorrows of Satan” begins by following a young writer called Geoffrey Tempest who is unable to make a living out of his profession and who is struggling to make ends meet. He wrote a book he is proud of, but none of the publishers in London want to work with him because his book lacks the vulgarity that sells and intrigues the audience.

Desperate, he writes to one of his friends asking for help and not expecting an answer he is surprised that the friend sent him some money, as well as recommendations to work with a noble coming his way, Prince Lucio Rimanez. He also reads a letter that reveals that he is the sole heir of a large fortune left to him by one of his distant relatives. Not believing his luck Geoffrey immediately starts making plans to publish his book and make a name for himself. On the same night, Prince Lucio arrives, and they make a deal in which the Prince will help him become even richer and more successful than he intended to.

Geoffrey’s journey towards the top begins, he makes deals for publishing his book and makes a name for himself at the English scene as an extremely rich person. He marries the beautiful Lady Sybil, aware that she is only after his riches. Despite everything he possesses Geoffrey feels miserable, realizing that the inspiration and joy from his life is gone.

Throughout the novel, he receives hints and warnings, from Lucio himself, that Lucio is actually the devil. Geoffrey is blissfully unaware of this. When he finally accepts the truth about his fascinating friend, Geoffrey Tempest goes back to the state of poverty and hopes to save his soul and repent.
