How does Tempest come into wealth?
Tempest receives a letter saying that he has had a distant relative die and leave him a fortune to inherit. His greed at the money makes him an easy target for Lucio to exploit. Indeed, he assumes even more wealth after his writing career takes off – but this ends up having its own consequences.

What does Lucio represent?
Lucio is the Devil incarnate, and he tempts Tempest into making poor, sinful decisions, such as materialism and greed for wealth. He is also a metaphor for the moral corruption of the wealthy – despite his affluence he seems to have no compassion or kindness to those who are not in a similar standing to himself.

What happens to Tempest in the end?
In the end, Tempest sees the error of his ways and renounces his wealth and social standing. Instead, he resumes his old life as a poor author, but this time, he is happy. He also remarries his first love, Mavis, and the two live happily ever after.
