Early in the work, the young prince decides to travel around his father's kingdom and tour all the regions in the company of seven subjects who happened to be his messengers. They were tasked with helping the prince communicate with loved ones and bringing the prince's letters to the capital.
The prince gave his seven messengers names in the alphabetic order so that he wouldn’t forget it. Their names were: Alessandro, Bartolomeo, Caio, Domenico, Ettore, Federico, and Gregorio. The prince sends Alessandro to the capital the day after they took off, and then other subjects in sequence.
Alessandro manages to return only on the eight-day and the prince realizes that the frontier seems more and more nonexistent. Soon the prince realizes that the further away they are from the capital, his servants require more and more time to return to the prince. Eight years have passed since the prince started this journey. One day, the prince realized that the messenger about to leave for the capital would return only in 34 years, by that time the prince would be either very old or even dead.
He gradually understands that his trip made no sense. Moreover, during this trip, he was considered lost in his homeland. His father died and his brother ascended the throne. Despite these events, the Prince continues his journey.
In fact, the author wanted to say that this journey represents life. The more we grow up, the more we move away from our parents, home, and acquire independent lives. The important thing is that all of us must act in a way that we do not regret the decisions we make in life because there is no way back.
