The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo Study Guide

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid was published in 2017. It is Jenkins Reid's 5th novel, but her first work of historical fiction; her first 4 novels are generally considered to be part of the romance novel genre. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo marks Jenkins Reid's debut into a new genre, earning her a wider readership and an expanded critical reputation. Jenkins Reid gave birth to her daughter shortly after completing the manuscript.

Subsequent to its publication, Jenkins Reid published two other well-regarded novels (Daisy Jones & The Six in 2019, and Malibu Rising in 2021), with another title forthcoming in 2022. In these other titles, she has explored themes of fame, ambition, family secrets, and high-achieving women, while also setting the novels in different historical periods.

The novel was well-received and commercially successful; it was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award in 2017 in the category of Best Historical Fiction. It has been translated into many languages.

In 2019, the rights to the story were purchased by Freeform, with the intention of the novel being adapted into a television series. This project was eventually cancelled; as of 2022, a Netflix film adaptation of the novel is in the works.
