The Room Where It Happened Summary

The Room Where It Happened Summary

The Room Where It Happened covers John Bolton's time as National Security Advisor to President Trump from April 2018 to September 2019. In the book, Bolton provides commentary on Trump and his Presidency, as well as Bolton's own record in politics in both the Ronald Reagan (as Assistant Attorney General) and George W. Bush (as the United Nations ambassador) administrations.

More than anything, though, The Room Where It Happened makes the argument that Donald Trump is an incompetent, unethical, and inept President who routinely says horrible things and often breaks the law in rather startling ways.

For example, on one occasion, Bolton claimed that Trump explicitly asked China's dictator Xi Jinping to help him win re-election by purchasing more "farm products" from U.S. farmers, which would help Trump secure "crucial votes" in farming states. In exchange, Bolton alleges that Trump offered Xi Jinping to reduce tariffs on Chinese products.

On another instance, Bolton claims that Trump told the aforementioned Xi Jinping that he approved of the Chinese building concentration camps Muslim Uyghur population.

In another, people who Bolton saw as "Trump loyalists" like Mike Pompeo made fun of Trump's apparent lack of knowledge about basic things like geography. Allegedly, Trump asked if Finland was part of Russia.

It is for these reasons - as well as a number of other reasons, including Trump's Ukraine scandal - that Bolton argued that Trump ought to be impeached.
